What is Reverse DNS (PTR) and How Does It Work?
A reverse DNS (PTR) lookup maps an IP address back to its associated domain name. While standard forward DNS resolves a hostname like example.com into an IP address like 93.184.216.34, a PTR record works in reverse.
Why is Reverse DNS Important?
- Email Deliverability & Anti-Spam Checks: Major email service providers (Gmail, Microsoft 365, Yahoo) check whether incoming mail server IP addresses have valid reverse DNS records. Mail from servers without matching PTR records is often flagged as spam or rejected.
- Network Security & Logging: Security analysts use reverse DNS to identify incoming traffic, origin servers, and suspicious IP addresses in firewall and access logs.
- Forward-Confirmed Reverse DNS (FCrDNS): Verification where the PTR record of an IP address matches a hostname, and that hostname resolves back to the exact same IP address.
How PTR Records are Formatted
Reverse DNS queries use special pointer domains:
- IPv4: Reverses the four octets and appends
.in-addr.arpa. For example,8.8.8.8becomes8.8.8.8.in-addr.arpa. - IPv6: Reverses each individual nibble and appends
.ip6.arpa.
